Camerota Province - the old town centre Camerota's old town centre was built on a hill. Just like all the towns in Magna Graecia, its name, Camerota, is bound to a legend telling about Palinuro, Enea's boatman, and Kamarotòn, a fascinating girl travelling on a boat. Palinuro fell deeply in love with the girl. But his love was not returned. Venus got angry and turned Kamaratòn into an isolated rock. In ancient Greek Kamaratòn means "vault", "vault-shaped". It can describe both the use of vaults to build houses and natural caves existing in that area.
Since Camerota's name has a Greek origin, the town is supposed to be founded by the Greeks in 7th - 8th centuries b.C. when they settled Southern Italy. That small town developed around a castle, walled in 535 - 553, when the Gothic - Byzantine war took place and several refugees were settling down into that area. There were three gates providing access to the town: Suso Gate - the only gate still remaining , Holy Mary Gate and Holy Nicola Gate - opened at scheduled times with three silver keys.
Then the town was occupied by the Saracens from 868 to 915. In 909 Camerota's castle was the one of the strongholds in Cilento area, along with Agropoli. This castle was one of the 150 Munita Oppida. The area was dominated by the Angevins from 1266 to 1442, that replaced old feudal landowners with French knights. In July 1552 a powerful army from Turkey was led by General Rais Dragut, who attacked the castle severely damaging it. In the same year Marquis Don Placido de Sangro rebuilt the castle and the Laiella tower.
Sudden incursions of enemies coming from the Tyrrhenian Sea took place so often that the Royal Court wanted the coast of the reign to be walled and provided with towers. They started working in 1563 and finished in 1601. While towers were being built, the Convento dei Cappuccini was founded in Camerota. It was the town hall for a long time and now it is used by the sisters of the Franciscan congregation.
On 23rd July 1647 a bloody population uprising took place. People fought against their feudal landowner Paolo Marchese II and ius primae noctis, a very unpopular law, in Camerota after Naples' Masaniello Revolution. On 2nd August 1806 King Giuseppe Napoleone banned the feudal system. In 1828 a revolt broke out in the whole Reign. Many citizens from Camerota took part in it. Cilento Revolt had a very bad outcome. Nevertheless it contributed to the Italian unification process. Many people died during the World War I and II in Camerota.
